Once you dive into the world of Hellraiser, I'm sure you might have tried to make your own cenobites. I'm curious to know about your own cenobites. Here's the four I made.
The first one I've created (and my entry to the Hellraiser: Origins contest back in November) is a young woman known as Nightingale. She's rather unusual for a cenobite since she looks extremely human with eyes that turn to her dark blue human color in the Labyrinth and certain lighting in the human world and silver wavy hair going down to her waist. Just black spikes coming from her head like a crown, colorless skin, and some cuts on her arms and exposed midriff reveal her cenobite nature. Her outfit is a black sleeveless crop top covered in feathers with a silver design in the front. She also wears black gloves made with ribbons held in place with hooks and a floor length leather skirt with an overskirt made of large purple feathers. Her human backstory varies depending on the timeframe but remains very similar. When she was a young girl, Ember's older sister ran away from home (I haven't determined why in an Origins setting but in a modern/Hellraiser movies setting, Amethyst had a secret drug problem and didn't want Ember to find her dead) and depression silenced her. She was sent to a mental hospital/asylum to get the help she needs but nothing worked for the silent Ember. During these two months of hell, her parents visited her every day and she befriended the family of nightingales living in the tree next to her room, giving some hope in regaining her sanity. She then started dreaming about the Lament Configuration and wanted to learn more about the box during her stay there. One day, she managed to find her way home (in Origins, she escaped. In a modern day world, she broke her silence to her parents after seeing the words "Schedule lobotomy" on the doctor's notes for her wondering what the "L" word meant) and over time became a very talented opera singer. After giving a swan song, she manages to find the box of her dreams and solves it, summoning the High Priest. She usually falls victim to Cupid's arrow when the two first meet (again it varies on the story whether or not he loves her back) and she comes willingly to be with him. Sometimes she starts out as a tortured soul then rising to become a cenobite, other times she becomes a solder in Leviathan’s army right away. In the Origins mythos she breaks out in song to persuade him to not kill her. Inspiered by the song, she gets to keep her singing voice and music sing everything she says like in a musicless opera (this was before I found out about Bright Eyes and The Voice. But since finding out about them, I just kept her the way she is). While in The Labyrinth, she does manage to find her sister now transformed into the powerful Merkova. Nightingale’s human appearance is used to the cenobites’ advantage. She typically goes ahead of the other cenobites in order to gain the unsuspecting human’s trust before the others show up to tear apart souls. Inside of the Labyrinth, she typically is fallowing her beloved whether the pin headed high priest views her as a lover or a leach and takes care of the children of Hell.
Aidan and Lenore are cenobite twins. They typically look up to the High Priest and Nightingale as their parents since in my Hellraiser mythos, there is such thing as children cenobites which can be either born to a human mother and cenobite father but have to be conceived in the human realm for the pregnancy to result in “halflings” or dead human children can be transformed into pseudo-cenobites. Aidan has spikes growing out of his head almost in a bulls-eye pattern especially with blood coming out of the one of the rings. He wears a sleeveless top with rips in the front and hooks and safety pins decorating it, black leather gauntlets, black and purple leather pants, and black boots with silver buckles on the side. He also has cuts on the right side of his chest and kept (or was born) with blue eyes. Lenore also has the blue eyes and light brown hair in a curl down the side just past her shoulder taking after her mother. The young female cenobite is seen in a black party dress with matching cuffs that cover her hands, black Mary-Jane shoes, and a black necklace with a lavender stone echoing Nightingale’s necklace with an amethyst stone. Her cenobite mutilations are a black crown off the side growing from her head and what looks like bleeding stitches going down her arms and legs. Aidan is very shy and reserved, but loves to study all that is to be known in his world and shadowing Pinhead in rituals so he could be a priest just like his father. Lenore on the other hand is charismatic and very polite to the point of Angelique admitting that she feels a little embarrassed when Lenore calls her “your highness” and she typically fallows around the stronger cenobites hoping to become as strong of a warrior. The children are also known as Chimera and Manticore because he has skills the three animals used to make up one have (Aidan is slippery like a snake and hard to catch, has a goat’s sense of balance, and can get ruthless like a lion) and her favorite weapon is a whip that looks like a scorpion’s tail which is worn around the waist and Lenore carries a plush mainticore named “Manny.” When the two turn 18 and become full cenobites, they take after their mythical beast nicknames more with Aidan gaining goat horns, scales up his arms, and he can make knives come out of his gauntlets and Lenore’s outfit turns into a mini skirt and midriff top covered in hair reminding others of her Auntie Merkova. If you loved kids before and Aidan and Lenore enter your torture chamber, you’ll hate everyone under the age of the majority that’s how sadistic the twins can get.
The final cenobite I have created is Jackdaw. He was among the gash that kidnapped an unsuspecting Amethyst Seward and turned her into Merkova. The bottom half of his body looks like a normal human with leather pants decorated with stitches, a chain belt to hold his tools, and black boots covered in studs. His head also looks normal with black eyes and black circles under them. His chest is where the horror lies, torn open reviling his ribs and missing lungs and heart. He’s very tall with a broad build. In my stories taking place in modern times, it’s noted that he looks like Peter Steele from the band Type O Negative but of course it’s not the same person since the real Peter was present when the strung out groupie got dragged into the Labyrinth. After Merkova became familiar with her new life, Jackdaw became her alley with the two joining up in missions together. When not reaping souls, he often is baking in hoping another cenobite wanders in wanting to snack on something to get rid of a craving with his regulars including Merkova demanding a post mission iced coffee, Nightingale wanting to snack on a pasta dish, and Butterball who’ll just clean up kitchen sometimes with Chatterer’s help. I recently came up with Jackdaw so it’ll take me a couple of weeks before I can think of a human backstory for him.
They say pictures are worth 1000 words and since I'm member of the avatar social network, GaiaOnline, I’ve made “dream avatars” of my cenobite characters and if I find the motivation, I’m sure I’ll draw them as well. From left to right; Nightingale, Aidan, Lenore, Jackdaw.
